They are washed hot, dried hard, and replaced by the hundred. A sound buying decision looks past the first impression and asks how the towel will look after a year in commercial laundry.

The standard hotel towel set

Sizes vary by country and by brand standard, but most properties work with the same family of pieces:

Bath towel: the main guest towel. Sizes around 70 × 140 cm are common, with larger bath sheets in premium rooms.

Hand towel: placed at the basin. Sizes around 40 × 70 cm or 50 × 100 cm are typical.

Face towel or washcloth: a small square, often about 30 × 30 cm.

Bath mat: a heavier, flat-woven or terry piece for the floor.

Pool or beach towel: larger, and often coloured or striped so it is easy to tell apart from room linen.

Confirm the sizes in your own brand standard before you ask for a quotation, and state whether dimensions are measured before or after washing.

Why most hotel towels are white

White signals cleanliness to guests, and it is practical. White cotton can be washed at high temperatures and treated to remove stains without the risk of colour fading or shade variation between batches. Replacement stock always matches.

Choosing the weight

Weight is measured in GSM, grams per square metre. Heavier towels feel more luxurious but cost more to wash and take longer to dry. Budget and mid-range properties often choose medium weights. Premium properties move higher. The right figure is the one that meets your guest expectation at a laundry cost you can sustain.

What survives commercial laundry

These construction details decide how long a towel lasts:

Yarn quality: combed and ring-spun cotton yarns are generally smoother and stronger than basic open-end yarns, and shed less lint.

Loop construction: dense, even loops resist pulling and keep the towel absorbent.

Hems: the side and end hems take the most strain. Look for neat, secure, double-stitched hems.

Borders: a decorative border can shrink at a different rate from the body of the towel and cause puckering. Ask for a washed sample to see how the border behaves.

Shrinkage: all cotton towels shrink a little. A supplier should tell you what to expect, so the washed towel still meets your size.

Branding for hotels

A hotel name or crest can be embroidered on the finished towel or woven in by jacquard. Embroidery suits logos and smaller quantities. Jacquard weaving builds the design into the fabric itself and suits larger programmes. Either way, branded towels reinforce the property's identity and discourage loss.

Plan stock, not only price

Hotels commonly hold several sets of towels per room, so that one is in the room, one is in the laundry, and one is in reserve. Order with that in mind, and ask whether the supplier can repeat the same specification on future orders so replacements match.

Before you order

Write a clear specification: size, GSM, composition, colour, border, branding, quantity.

Ask for a sample and wash it several times the way your laundry will.

Check size, weight, softness, and appearance after washing.

Approve the sample in writing and keep it as the reference.

Mansa Exim International supplies cotton bath towels, hand towels, and face towels for hotels and resorts, made to your specification and branded by embroidery or jacquard weaving. Contact us with your room count and specification for a quotation.

Neither is better in every case. The right answer depends on who uses the towel, how often it is washed, and what your buyers expect to feel when they pick it up.

How terry towels are made

Terry fabric is woven with two sets of warp yarns. One forms the flat base of the towel. The other is woven slack so it stands up as loops on the surface. Those loops are what make a towel absorbent: they add surface area that draws water away from skin.

The fibre in those loops decides how the towel behaves. This is where cotton and polycot part ways.

100% cotton terry

Cotton is a natural fibre that absorbs water readily and feels soft against skin. It is the standard for bath, hand, and face towels wherever comfort is the main concern.

Absorbency: high. Cotton takes up water quickly and holds it.

Hand feel: soft and natural, and it tends to stay that way with correct laundering.

Heat tolerance: cotton withstands hot washes, which matters for hotels and healthcare laundries.

Drying: slower than a blend, because the fibre holds more water.

Shrinkage: some shrinkage in early washes is normal and should be allowed for in the size.

Polycot terry

Polycot blends polyester with cotton. Polyester is a strong synthetic fibre that absorbs very little water. Blending it with cotton changes the balance of the towel.

Durability: polyester adds strength, so the towel stands up to frequent washing and heavy use.

Drying: faster than pure cotton, on the line and in the dryer.

Dimensional stability: blends generally shrink less and keep their shape.

Absorbency: lower than pure cotton. The more polyester in the blend, the less water the towel takes up.

Hand feel: a little less soft than pure cotton, though a good blend remains comfortable.

Which suits which buyer

Hotels, resorts, and spas usually specify pure cotton for guest-facing towels. Guests notice softness and absorbency first, and cotton delivers both.

Gyms and fitness chains often prefer polycot or a lighter cotton. Towels are used briefly, washed constantly, and need to dry fast between sessions.

Institutional buyers such as hostels, staff facilities, and large-volume laundries often choose polycot for its longer service life per towel.

Retail and private-label brands choose according to their positioning. A premium home range is normally pure cotton. A value or sports range may suit a blend.

Kitchens generally do best with cotton, which absorbs spills quickly, though polycot is used where durability is the priority.

Questions to ask before you decide

How many wash cycles should the towel last?

Will it be washed at high temperature or with bleach?

How quickly must it dry between uses?

What does the end user expect it to feel like?

What must appear on the care label in your market? Fibre content must be declared accurately.

Test both

If you are unsure, ask for a sample of each in the same size and weight. Wash them several times, compare drying time and feel, and let the result decide.

Mansa Exim International supplies terry towels in both cotton and polycot, in the weight, size, and colour you specify. These are Incoterms, the trade rules published by the International Chamber of Commerce. They decide who pays for transport, who arranges it, and the exact point at which risk passes from seller to buyer. Two quotations for the same towel can differ widely in price simply because they are on different terms.

What an Incoterm settles

Which costs the seller pays and which the buyer pays.

Who arranges transport and insurance.

Who handles export and import clearance.

Where the risk of loss or damage transfers.

An Incoterm does not set the price, the payment terms, or when ownership passes. Those belong in the sales contract.

The four terms towel buyers meet most

EXW: Ex Works

The seller makes the goods available at its own premises. The buyer arranges and pays for everything from that point: collection, export clearance, freight, insurance, import clearance, and delivery. EXW gives the lowest quoted price and the most work for the buyer. It suits buyers who already have a forwarder operating in the seller's country.

FOB: Free On Board

The seller delivers the goods on board the vessel at the named port of shipment and clears them for export. Risk passes to the buyer once the goods are on board. The buyer arranges and pays the ocean freight, insurance, and everything at destination. FOB is widely used for sea freight because it lets the buyer control freight cost while the seller handles the local side.

CIF: Cost, Insurance and Freight

The seller pays for freight and insurance to the named destination port. Risk still passes to the buyer when the goods are loaded on board at origin, even though the seller has paid for the voyage. The buyer handles import clearance, duties, and onward delivery. CIF suits buyers who want one price to their port without arranging freight themselves.

DDP: Delivered Duty Paid

The seller delivers the goods to the named place in the buyer's country, cleared for import, with duties paid. The seller carries the cost and risk the whole way. DDP is the simplest for the buyer and the most demanding for the seller, and it is not always practical, because the seller must be able to clear goods in the buyer's country.

A note on sea and other transport

FOB and CIF are designed for sea and inland waterway transport. For air freight or mixed transport, the equivalent terms are FCA (Free Carrier) and CIP (Carriage and Insurance Paid To). If your towels are travelling by air, ask for the quotation on one of those.

Comparing quotations fairly

To compare an FOB price with a CIF price, add your own freight and insurance cost to the FOB figure. To compare with EXW, add inland transport to the port and export clearance as well. Only then are you comparing like with like.

Which should you choose?

You have a freight forwarder and ship regularly: FOB usually gives you the best control of cost.

You are placing a first order and want simplicity: CIF gives a single price to your port.

You want goods delivered to your door with nothing to arrange: ask whether DDP is available for your country.

You consolidate goods from several suppliers in India: EXW or FCA may suit your forwarder.

Write it precisely

An Incoterm needs a named place and the edition of the rules, for example "FOB Nhava Sheva, Incoterms 2020" or "CIF Jebel Ali, Incoterms 2020". Put it in the quotation, the proforma invoice, and the purchase order, so there is no doubt later.

Mansa Exim International quotes on the term you prefer. Cotton terry towels fall under heading 6302, which covers bed, table, toilet, and kitchen linen. Toilet and kitchen linen of cotton terry towelling is classified under subheading 6302.60. Your country adds further digits to this code, and the full code decides the duty you pay, so confirm it with your broker.

Duties and taxes

Import duty, VAT or sales tax, and any other charges are set by the importing country and change over time. Do not rely on a figure quoted informally. Ask your customs broker for the current rate for your exact product and origin, and include it in your landed-cost calculation.

Understanding the price you are quoted

The Incoterm in the quotation tells you what the price includes. Under FOB, the price covers the goods loaded on the vessel at the Indian port, and you arrange and pay the ocean freight. Under CIF, the price includes freight and insurance to your port. Compare quotations only when they are on the same term.

Payment

Payment terms are agreed between buyer and seller. Common arrangements in international trade include an advance payment with the balance against shipping documents, or a letter of credit issued by the buyer's bank. Choose terms both sides are comfortable with, and put them in the purchase order.

Calculating your landed cost

The price per towel is only part of the cost. The towels are produced to your specification, and each towel reaches your customer carrying your brand. This guide walks through the process in the order it actually happens.

Step 1: Define the range

Decide what you will sell before you speak to a supplier. A focused first range is easier to launch than a wide one. Typical starting points:

A bath, hand, and face towel set in two or three colours.

A single hero product, such as a premium bath sheet or a gym towel.

A kitchen towel range in coordinated designs.

Be clear about who the buyer is and what price they will pay. That decides the weight, the cotton quality, and the packaging.

Step 2: Write the specification

For each product, set out the size, the weight in GSM, the composition (100% cotton or a blend), the colours with references, and the border style. The more exact the brief, the more accurate the quotation and the closer the first sample.

Step 3: Decide how the brand appears

Your brand can appear in several places, and most ranges use more than one:

On the towel: an embroidered logo, or a name woven in by jacquard.

Woven label: a small brand label stitched into the hem.

Care label: fibre content, care instructions, and country of origin. Labelling rules differ by market, so check the requirements where you will sell.

Packaging: a band, a hangtag, a printed box, or a bag. This is what the shopper sees first.

Step 4: Request quotations

Send the same specification to each supplier you are considering, so the prices can be compared like for like. State your quantities honestly, and name the delivery term you want, such as FOB or CIF, with the destination port.

Step 5: Sample and approve

Never skip the sample. Ask for a pre-production sample that includes your branding, then test it:

Weigh and measure it against the specification.

Wash it several times and check softness, shrinkage, and colour.

Check the branding, labels, and stitching closely.

Record any changes in writing. When the sample is right, approve it in writing and keep it. It becomes the standard for the bulk order.

Step 6: Production and quality checks

Once the sample is approved and the order is confirmed, the towels are woven, finished, branded, labelled, and packed. Agree at the start how quality will be checked, whether by the supplier's own inspection, your own visit, or a third-party inspection before shipment.

Step 7: Shipping and documents

The supplier prepares the export documents and ships under the agreed Incoterm. Your freight forwarder or customs broker clears the goods at destination. Confirm early which documents your country requires.

Common mistakes to avoid

Launching too wide. Many sizes and colours split your volume and raise cost per piece.

Approving from photographs. A towel has to be handled and washed to be judged.

Leaving packaging until last. Packaging artwork and printing take time. Start it alongside the sample.

Ignoring labelling rules. Incorrect labels can hold goods at customs or keep them off the shelf.

Planning repeat orders

A private-label range succeeds when the second order matches the first. Keep the approved sample, the written specification, and the colour references together, and ask your supplier to hold the same standard on every repeat.

Mansa Exim International supplies custom and private-label towels across bath, hand, face, gym, and kitchen ranges, branded by embroidery or jacquard weaving and made to your specification. Tell us about your range and we will guide you from sample to shipment.

It carries a hotel's identity into every room, turns a gym towel into a moving advertisement, and makes a retail range recognisably yours. There are two established ways to put a brand on a terry towel: embroidery and jacquard weaving. They look different, cost differently, and suit different orders.

Embroidery: stitched onto the finished towel

Embroidery is added after the towel is woven. A machine stitches the logo or name in coloured thread onto the towel, usually on the flat border or just above it.

Where it works well

Logos, crests, monograms, and short names.

Multi-colour designs, since each colour is simply a different thread.

Smaller and medium quantities, because the towel itself is standard and only the stitching is custom.

Programmes with several versions, such as different property names on the same towel.

What to keep in mind

Very fine detail and tiny lettering can be lost on a looped terry surface. A flat border gives a cleaner result.

Large, dense embroidery makes the area stiff and can pucker after washing.

The back of the embroidery is visible on the reverse of the towel.

Jacquard: woven into the towel

In jacquard weaving the design is created on the loom. The pattern, name, or logo is formed by the yarns themselves as the towel is woven, either in the border or across the body of the towel.

Where it works well

Names and logos woven into the border for a refined, integrated look.

All-over patterns and large designs that would be too heavy as embroidery.

Larger volumes, where the design work at the loom is spread over many pieces.

Towels that face heavy laundering, since there is no added thread to fray or loosen.

What to keep in mind

The design is part of the weaving, so it must be finalised before production starts. It cannot be changed afterwards.

Colour choices follow the yarns used in the towel, so designs are typically one or two colours, or tone-on-tone.

Set-up effort makes jacquard less economical for very small runs.

Side by side

Look: embroidery is raised and bold. Jacquard is flat, subtle, and part of the fabric.

Colours: embroidery handles many colours. Jacquard is usually limited to the towel's yarn colours.

Quantity: embroidery suits small to medium runs. Jacquard suits larger runs.

Flexibility: embroidery can vary from batch to batch. Jacquard is fixed once weaving begins.

Durability: both last well when done properly. Jacquard has no surface thread to wear.

How to choose

Start with three questions. How many towels do you need? How detailed and how colourful is your logo? What impression should the towel give, bold or understated? A boutique hotel with a detailed crest and a modest quantity will often choose embroidery. A hotel group or retail brand ordering at volume, wanting its name woven elegantly into the border, will often choose jacquard. Some buyers use both: a jacquard border on bath towels and embroidery on smaller pieces.

What to send your supplier

The logo as vector artwork.

The size you want it to appear, and where on the towel.

Colour references for thread or yarn.

Quantity per towel type.

Always approve a branded sample before bulk production. It is the only reliable way to judge how the design sits on real terry.

Mansa Exim International brands towels by both logo embroidery and jacquard weaving. See our custom and private-label towels, or share your artwork and we will advise on the right method for your order.

It is used for minutes, thrown in a bin, washed the same day, and expected to be dry and fresh for the next member. Buyers for fitness chains, studios, and sports brands need to specify for that cycle, not for a hotel bathroom.

What a gym towel has to do

Absorb sweat quickly. Members use the towel during a workout, on skin and on equipment.

Dry fast. In the laundry and in a gym bag. A towel that stays damp develops odour.

Survive constant washing. A busy club may wash each towel several times a week.

Stay a practical size. Big enough to cover a bench, small enough to carry.

Weight: lighter than you think

Plush, heavy towels suit a spa. On the gym floor they are slow to dry and expensive to launder, because commercial laundries charge by weight. Most fitness buyers choose a light to medium weight that absorbs well and turns around quickly. If your club also has changing rooms with showers, consider a second, heavier towel for that use.

Cotton or polycot

Pure cotton absorbs more and feels softer. A polyester and cotton blend dries faster, shrinks less, and generally lasts through more wash cycles. Many fitness operators choose polycot for workout towels and cotton for shower towels. If you are undecided, test a sample of each through your own laundry process.

Sizes used in fitness

There is no fixed standard, but two sizes cover most needs:

Workout or sweat towel: a small towel, roughly hand-towel size, carried on the gym floor.

Shower towel: a bath-size towel for the changing room.

Give your supplier the exact finished dimensions you want, and say whether they apply before or after washing.

Colour choices

White shows cleanliness and tolerates hot washing. Dark or brand colours hide marks and reinforce identity, but need good colour fastness so they do not fade or bleed. Ask for a washed sample of any dyed towel before you commit to volume.

Branding that lasts

A logo on every towel is constant, visible branding, and it discourages towels from leaving the building. There are two main methods. Embroidery stitches the logo onto the finished towel and suits most club quantities. Jacquard weaving builds the name or logo into the towel itself, so there is nothing to fray or peel, and suits larger programmes. Share your artwork and quantities and ask the supplier which is the better fit.

How many towels to order

Work from your daily usage. Count the towels issued on a busy day, allow for the stock that is in the laundry at any time, and add a reserve for loss and wear. Ordering a little above the minimum avoids running short during peak months, and a repeatable specification keeps future top-up orders consistent.

A quick specification checklist

Towel type: workout towel, shower towel, or both.

Finished size.

Weight in GSM.

Composition: cotton or polycot.

Colour, with a reference.

Branding method, artwork, and position.

Quantity and delivery destination.

Mansa Exim International supplies cotton and polycot gym towels for fitness chains and sports brands, custom branded and exported from India. Send us your specification for a quotation.

The end use tells the supplier what matters most, whether softness, durability, or fast drying.

2. Size

Give the finished dimensions in centimetres or inches, for example 70 × 140 cm. Say whether the size is measured before or after washing, since cotton towels shrink a little in early washes.

3. Weight

State the GSM (grams per square metre), or the weight per piece in grams. Either works, as long as the size is fixed. If you are not sure, describe the feel you want and ask the supplier to propose a weight.

4. Composition

Specify 100% cotton or a polyester and cotton blend, and the blend ratio if you have one in mind. If yarn quality matters to you, say so: for example combed cotton, or ring-spun yarn.

5. Colour

White, or a dyed colour. For colours, give a reference such as a Pantone code or send a physical swatch. Describe any stripes or contrast borders.

6. Border and construction

Mention the border style you want (plain, dobby, or a jacquard design) and the hem finish. If you have an existing towel you like, send it or a clear photograph.

7. Branding

If the towels will carry your logo or name, say how: embroidery, or woven into the towel by jacquard. Share the artwork, its size, its position on the towel, and the thread or yarn colours.

8. Labels and packing

List what each towel should carry: a woven label, a care label, a hangtag, a band. State how the towels should be packed, for example individually bagged, or bundled in sets, and how many pieces per carton.

9. Quantity

Give the quantity per size and colour, and say whether this is a one-time order or a repeating programme. Volume affects price, so an honest estimate produces a more useful quotation.

10. Delivery terms and destination

Name the destination port or city and the Incoterm you prefer, such as FOB or CIF. State the date you need the goods.

11. Compliance and testing

If your market or your customer requires a particular certificate, test report, or labelling rule, list it at the start. It is far easier to plan for at quotation stage than after production.

A short example

Bath towel for hotel guest rooms. 70 × 140 cm finished size. 550 GSM. 100% cotton, white. Dobby border. Hotel name embroidered in one colour, 8 cm wide, centred above the border. Care label sewn in. Packed in polybags of five, export cartons. 3,000 pieces. CIF Jebel Ali. Required at destination by a stated date.

A few lines, and a supplier can price it accurately and make a matching sample.

What happens next

A good supplier will confirm the specification, point out anything that is unclear, and produce a sample for approval before bulk production begins. Approve the sample in writing, and keep it. It is the reference for the whole order.

Ready to send a specification? This guide explains what GSM measures, what it does not measure, and how to pick the right weight for the place your towels will be used.

What GSM means

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It is the weight of one square metre of the finished towel fabric. A towel with more cotton packed into each square metre has a higher GSM, and it will feel heavier and thicker in the hand.

You can check GSM yourself. Weigh the towel in grams, measure its length and width in metres, and divide the weight by the area. A towel that weighs 490 grams and measures 0.7 m by 1.4 m has an area of 0.98 square metres, so its GSM is 500.

General weight bands

There is no single global standard, but these bands are widely used across the trade as a working guide:

300 to 400 GSM: light towels that dry fast. Common for gym towels, kitchen towels, and travel or pool use.

400 to 600 GSM: medium weight. The usual range for everyday bath and hand towels in homes, mid-range hotels, and retail lines.

600 GSM and above: heavy, plush towels. Chosen for premium hotels, spas, and gift ranges where a rich hand feel matters most.

Heavier is not always better

A higher GSM towel absorbs more water and feels more luxurious, but it brings three costs that buyers should weigh before they order.

Drying time. A dense towel holds more water and takes longer to dry, on the line and in the tumble dryer. In a humid climate or a busy gym this matters every day.

Laundry cost. Commercial laundries usually charge by weight. A hotel that moves from 500 GSM to 650 GSM is paying to wash roughly thirty per cent more fabric on every cycle.

Freight. Towels are shipped by weight and volume. Heavier towels mean fewer pieces per carton and per container, which raises the landed cost per piece.

What GSM does not tell you

Two towels with the same GSM can perform very differently. The weight says nothing about the quality of the cotton, the type of yarn, the height and density of the loops, or how well the hems are stitched. A well-made 500 GSM towel in combed cotton will usually outlast a poorly made 600 GSM towel.

That is why GSM should sit alongside the rest of the specification: fibre composition, yarn type, size, border style, colour, and finishing. Always ask for a physical sample and weigh it, so the figure on the quotation matches the towel in your hand.

Matching GSM to the use

Hotels and resorts: balance guest comfort against laundry cost. Many properties choose a medium to heavy bath towel and a lighter hand and face towel.

Spas and wellness: softness against skin matters more than bulk. A medium weight in fine cotton often works better than the heaviest option.

Gyms and fitness chains: light, quick-drying towels cope with high turnover and constant washing.

Retail and private label: choose the weight that fits your price point and the promise on your packaging.

Kitchens: a lighter towel that absorbs fast and dries fast is the practical choice.

Specify it in writing

When you request a quotation, state the GSM you want along with the size, composition, colour, and branding. A clear brief lets a supplier price accurately and produce a sample that matches.

Mansa Exim International supplies cotton and polycot terry towels to the buyer's specification, including the weight. It shows what the supplier understood from your brief and what the bulk order will look like. Yet many buyers glance at a sample, feel it once, and approve it. A proper evaluation takes an afternoon and a washing machine, and it can save an entire order.

1. Check it against the specification

Put the sample next to your written specification and go line by line.

Size: measure length and width with a tape. Note the figures.

Weight: weigh the towel on a kitchen or postal scale. Divide the weight in grams by the area in square metres to get the GSM, and compare it with what you asked for.

Colour: compare with your reference in daylight, not only under shop or office lighting.

Border and design: confirm the style matches the brief.

2. Look closely at the construction

Loops: the pile should be even and dense, with no bare patches and no long, loose loops.

Hems: the stitching should be straight and secure, with no loose threads at the corners.

Edges: the sides should be straight and firm.

Surface: look for pulled threads, stains, or uneven dyeing.

3. Test absorbency

Lay the towel flat and drop a little water on the surface. On a cotton towel it should sink in quickly instead of sitting on top. Some new towels carry a finish that slows absorbency until the first wash, so repeat this test after washing.

4. Wash it, more than once

This is the test that matters most. Wash and dry the sample at least three to five times, the way the towel will be laundered in real use. After that, check:

Shrinkage: measure again. Some shrinkage is normal for cotton, but the washed towel should still meet the size you need.

Softness: does it still feel as it should?

Colour: has it faded? Did it bleed onto other items?

Lint: a little lint in the first washes is common. Heavy, continuing lint points to weaker yarn.

Shape: is the towel still square, or has the border puckered or the hem twisted?

Loops: have threads pulled out during washing?

5. Inspect the branding

If the sample carries your logo, check its size, position, and colour against your artwork. Embroidery should be neat, with no loose stitches, and should not pucker the towel after washing. A jacquard design should be clear and correctly placed.

6. Check labels and packing

Confirm that the care label states the correct fibre content, care instructions, and origin, and that it meets the rules of the market where you will sell. If you asked for particular packaging, review that too.

7. Give clear feedback

If something is not right, say exactly what and by how much: "length is 2 cm short", "shade is darker than the reference", "logo should be 1 cm higher". Vague feedback produces a second sample with new problems. Ask for a revised sample where the change is significant.

8. Approve in writing and keep the sample

When the sample is right, approve it in writing and note any agreed tolerances. Keep one approved sample yourself, and ask the supplier to keep one. That sample is the reference for bulk production and for any inspection before shipment.

A simple checklist

Measured and weighed against the specification.

Construction inspected.

Absorbency tested.

Washed and dried several times, then re-measured.

Branding, labels, and packing checked.

Feedback sent, or approval given, in writing.

At Mansa Exim International, every order begins with a sample made to your specification, confirmed with you before production starts.
